How it is marked

What each part of the data question earns

Section C is one data question worth 34 marks. These are the marks the mark schemes give each part. Knowledge is knowing the idea, application is using the extract, analysis is the chain of reasoning, and evaluation is weighing it up.

PartWhere the marks come from
Define 2Knowledge 2A precise definition of the term. Both marks are for knowledge.
Explain 4Knowledge 2 + Application 2Make the point, then use a number or fact from the extract.
Analyse 6Knowledge 2 + Application 2 + Analysis 2Explain the chain of causes step by step. There are no marks for evaluation here.
Examine 8Knowledge 2 + Application 2 + Analysis 2 + Evaluation 2The same as Analyse 6, then one point that weighs it up.
Discuss 148 for knowledge, application and analysis + 6 for evaluationMarked in levels. Develop two or three points with the extract, then weigh them up.
Essay 2012 for knowledge, application and analysis + 8 for evaluationSection D: choose 1 of 2. Marked in levels.

What the past papers show

Section A tests diagrams
The multiple choice questions ask you to read values off diagrams, such as how a tax is shared between buyers and sellers, and which labelled area is consumer or producer surplus.
One Calculate, usually one Draw
Section B has one Calculate question and usually one Draw question. The other short questions are Explain.
The data question builds up
Section C usually goes Define 2, Explain 4, Analyse 6, Examine 8, Discuss 14. Since October 2021, Explain 4 and Analyse 6 have sometimes swapped places.
No equations
No paper asks you to solve demand or supply equations.

What to do tonight

Do not try to learn the whole unit again. Do these, then sleep.

  1. Draw the diagrams of Unit 1 from memory once each: supply and demand shifts, a tax and a subsidy, consumer and producer surplus, and externalities.
  2. Answer one data question from start to finish under time, then check it against the marks for each part below.
  3. Plan one Section D essay: 3 points, each with a weighing-up point, and a conclusion that answers the question.

Every topic in Unit 1 has a free Practice tab. Marking of written answers is part of Pro.
