How it is marked

What each part of the data question earns

Section B is one data question worth 34 marks. These are the marks the mark schemes give each part. Knowledge is knowing the idea, application is using the extract, analysis is the chain of reasoning, and evaluation is weighing it up.

PartWhere the marks come from
Calculate 2Application 2One mark for the method, one for the answer. The answer needs its unit (%, $, £) to get the second mark.
Explain 4Knowledge 2 + Application 2Make the point, then use a number or fact from the extract.
Analyse 6Knowledge 2 + Application 2 + Analysis 2Explain the chain of causes step by step. There are no marks for evaluation here.
Examine 8Knowledge 2 + Application 2 + Analysis 2 + Evaluation 2The same as Analyse 6, then one point that weighs it up.
Discuss 148 for knowledge, application and analysis + 6 for evaluationMarked in levels. Develop two or three points with the extract, then weigh them up.
Essay 2012 for knowledge, application and analysis + 8 for evaluationSection C: choose 2 of 3. Marked in levels.
From the real papers

What the past papers show

Q7 starts and ends the same way
Q7(a) is always Calculate 2 and Q7(e) is always Discuss 14. The three parts in between change order from paper to paper.
“Examine two” every time
Every paper has an “Examine two …” part. Since June 2023, Q7(e) also asks you to use “your own knowledge”, not only the extract.
One essay of each kind
Each paper offers one essay about any country, one about developed countries and one about developing countries. You answer two.
Name real countries
Mark schemes cap essays with no country at 9 of the 12 marks for knowledge, application and analysis. No essay asks for a diagram.

The night before

What to do tonight

Do not try to learn the whole unit again. Do these, then sleep.

  1. Choose two developed and two developing countries, with one fact about each, ready for Section C.
  2. Practise a percentage change and a terms of trade calculation, with the unit in the answer.
  3. Plan two essays: three points each, a country for each point, and a weighing-up point for each.

Every topic in Unit 4 has a free Practice tab. Marking of written answers is part of Pro.
